Young Lovers Set To Wed Commits Suicide In Anambra.

Young Lovers Reportedly Commit Suicide In Anambra, Leaves Note (See Copy)

The two lovers yet to be identified and have been dating for six years allegedly took their lives after drinking popular insecticide, Snipper.

They committed suicide because their parents refused to give consent for them to get married to each other.

The marriage could not hold  because one of them is reportedly an Osu.

The Osu caste system is an ancient practice in Igboland that discourages social interaction and marriage with a group of persons called Osu (outcast)

Osus are dedicated to the deities (Alusi) of Igboland; they are considered as inferior beings and are usually separated from the Nwadiala or diala.

While some communities in Eastern Nigeria have abolished the tradition, a few others are still holding on to it.

However, before their death, the lovers left a suicide note where they lamented on how they laboured to build their relationship only to be hindered by an ancient belief system.

The content in the letter;

“Racism in disguise…

How can we separate after 6 solid years of dating and getting so use to each other? how???

Is it a crime to be held from Okija Anambra state? We both are from Okija in Ihiala local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria. We have always wanted to spend the rest of lives together, we’ve always planned our future together. We have always struggled to secure a better future, now that things are gradually turning around for us, they’re saying we can’t get married, all because of Osu and Ohu Caste, all because of an ancient belief that has been abolished in other villages.

The people of Okija chose to live in the past, all as a result of ignorance. God created everyone equally so why would human beings discriminate just because of the ignorance of our forefathers? Why will we keep sufferering for what we know nothing about, for something we didn’t do??? Why do we still chose to stay in the dark? This is racism in disguise, yet we want to be treated equally in the white man’s land, charity they say begins at home.

We made up our minds to end it all because we can’t stay without each other. Ndi Okija, say No to Osu Caste!!!”.

Below are some of the comments about the young lover’s decision to commit suicide.

@Amin6rd “They could’ve just run somewhere far and get married”

@takemeawaywit1 “I no need run If you can’t bless my marriage than leave me alone”

@PRofLagos “So disheartening, this has to stop. Everyone should be allowed to spend forever with whom they choose. And also, people should understand that taking their own lives isn’t a solution at all.

@Dorian820 “Based on Community Standards The Human Species have Made it a normal thing now to Commit suicide and to leave a note as to why they did it….it helps them soothe their own conscience….it’s a personal decision…..based on the level of the Understanding of the deceased.
