Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has been declared winner of the Anambra Governorship Election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Professor Florence Obi, the Returning Officer of the Anambra Governorship Election, who announced the result early Wednesday morning at Awka, Anambra State, said the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has satisfied the requirements of the law.

“That Charles Chukwuma Soludo of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Obi said.

The November 6 Anambra State Governorship election was declared inconclusive by INEC last Monday (November 8) and a supplementary election was held in the Ihiala Local Government Area (LGA) of the state on Tuesday November 9.

Soludo,61, won with 112,229 votes beating Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 53,807 votes, Andy Uba of the All Progressives (APC) who won 43,285 votes and Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressive  (YPP) who got 21,261 votes. Soludo won in 19 local government areas, Ozigbo and Ubah won in one LGA each.

Soludo became the candidate of APGA when the Supreme Court in Abuja recently affirmed him as APGA governorship candidate and the apex court ordered INEC to replaced Chukwuma Umeoji, the former APGA candidate, with Soludo for the governorship election.

Soludo, in his acceptance speech on Wednesday, dedicated his victory to the three policemen who were killed in April 2021 during the build-up to the election when he himself narrowly escaped death when gunmen unleashed terror on him and his security aides during a town hall meeting in his hometown in Isuofia in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra.

Soludo is expected to be sworn into office next March after the expiration of the two-term tenure of the incumbent governor, Willie Obiano, who is also of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
