An overcrowded speed boat has collided with a sand-laden bulk carrier on Bangladesh’s giant Padma River, leaving at least twenty-six people killed and several others missing.

A police source, which confirmed that the accident happened early on Monday, said the head-on collision caused the passenger ferry to sink.

It said the mishap occurred at the central Madaripur District, adding that five people were rescued and sent to hospital.

A recent Reuters report says hundreds of people die each year in ferry accidents in Bangladesh, a low-lying country that has extensive inland waterways and lax safety standards.
