A ‘Black-ish’ spinoff titled ‘Old-ish’ has been confirmed to be in development.
Black-ish is an American sitcom that made its debut on Freeform in 2014 and is currently in its sixth season. The show follows the Johnson family as they navigate through a series of (mis)adventures.
In the years that have followed, black-ish has led to two different spin-off series, both of which are housed on Freeform as well. mixed-ish tells the story of a young Rainbow Johnson, who eventually becomes Dre Johnson’s wife and the mother to Zoey, Junior, Diane, Jack, and DeVonte in black-ish. On the other hand, grown-ish focuses on Zoey Johnson as she sets off for college and experiences what it’s like to be on her own.
Both spin-offs, as well as the original series, have been met with positive reception and critical acclaim, particularly for the diverse storytelling and talented cast.
The series, which is currently in development at the Alphabet network, will be penned by black-ish creator Kenya Barris, who will also serve as an executive producer. It centers on Fishburne’s Earl and Lewis’ Ruby — the parents of Anthony Anderson’s black-ish character Dre — as they give love a second chance.
“When they move to a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of L.A., they’ll meet characters who represent the old and new faces of the community as they try to make it work as a married couple. Again.”
In addition to starring in the series, Fishburne will be at the helm as an executive producer, while Lewis will serve as the series’ producer. As a result, both will have a significant amount of ownership over old-ish, which will likely provide a candid look at what it means to be an older couple navigating through life.
While mainstream television shows focused on the everyday life of older American couples tend to be few and far between, the black-ish franchise has already shown that it isn’t afraid to dive headfirst into uncharted waters. That being said, Fishburne and Lewis’ heavy involvement means the show is in good hands.
While the details behind old-ish remain a mystery, viewers will be delighted to see Fishburne and Lewis front and center in their own series, especially as Ruby and Earl Johnson quickly cemented themselves as fan favorites.
Although fans will have to be content with their appearances on black-ishfor now, here’s to more of Earl “Pops” Johnson’s voice of reason and Ruby Johnson’s fun (but undeniable) sense of chaos in the not-so-distant future!
Fishburne and Lewis have played Earl and Ruby on black-ish since the ABC comedy’s freshman season back in 2014. Fishburne has been recurring as Earl (aka Pops) for all six seasons, while Lewis has been a series regular since Season 2 after recurring during the first season.
