The inauguration ceremony of the Board at the Governor’s office on Tuesday represented one of the steps towards the domestication of global best practices in public procurement by Ondo State Government.
Governor Akeredolu in his speech emphasized that the society has been the ultimate beneficiaries in government reforms programs “Permit me to emphasize that in every clime where global best practices have been institutionalized as a critical element of governance reforms, the society has always been the ultimate beneficiaries”.
In terms of institutionalizing governance reforms, I am proud to announce that going by the current rating of the international development partners/bilateral institutions, Ondo State ranks amongst the best three in the whole Federation.
“The importance of this history-making occasion cannot, therefore, be over emphasized in view of the incontrovertible fact that the Public Procurement Law will change and revolutionize the way we have always handled our contract management process.” He said
The Governor noted that the Ondo State Board of Public Procurement has posted some modest achievements since its establishment as follows: the re-engineering of BPP’s personnel, policies and guidelines to engender improved productivity, focus and turnaround time for producing benchmark prices; to enhance communication, we have launched the BPP website with the following address: bpp.on.gov.ng.
The website which is in now functional and interactive; through appropriate benchmarks and value for money policies made a potential savings of not less than N460m for government in the past six months as part of our efforts towards reducing the cost of governance; published resource documents e.g the Public Procurement Law and the draft Procurement Guidelines on the BPP’s website. Education on the Public Procurement Law is ongoing. Amongst others.
Akeredolu however asked for the support and co-operation of all and sundry in various establishments in the state to make the reform work and advised to adjust to the new initiative as it has come to stay.
The Governor said, “The fact that we decided to inaugurate the Procurement Board at this critical period, when the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is ravaging the entire world, without compromising any safety protocols attests to our administration’s commitment to governance.
It is pertinent to add that in fulfillment of our constitutional roles and oath of office to protect and preserve the lives and properties of the citizens, our government has been demonstrating its capacity and commitment to contain the virus.”
