Three suspected traffickers including a second time offender and a fugitive have been apprehended with Class A hard drugs by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
The NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr Garba Ahmadu at a new conference in Lagos said, the suspects were arrested with 137.8 kilograms of cocaine, during an inward clearance of passengers on arrival from Brazil onboard Ethiopian airlines and at a cargo warehouse at the Lagos International airport.
He said the drugs were cleverly concealed in packet shirts covered with carbon paper and an oily substance,hair relaxers and tailoring materials, to beat detection by the scanning machine.
“The year started with serious concern…Drugs being seized are all class A, Cocaine, Cocaine”, Mr. Garba stated.
He said one of the suspects, Okeke Uchenna was a second time offender and a fugitive wanted by the Federal High Court Lagos for jumping bail for a drug related offence in 2014.
Mr. Garba said, Mr. Uchenna was also on the wanted lists in Benin republic for a similar offence.
The three suspects, Okeke Uchenna, 13kg, Azubuike Jeremiah, 7.8kg and Abdul Musa, 117kg, denied knowledge of the concealed drugs, adding that they were given the bags without checking the contents.
In 2020, the airport command seized over 3413 kilograms of illicit drugs and arrested about 6 suspects.
